Cleveland Botanical Gardens

The Cleveland Botanical Gardens are the nation's oldest  gardens.  They were started in 1930, and cover over seven and a half acres.

The gardens include the Hershey's Children's Garden, which is the first public children's garden of Ohio.  It features a tree house, cave, dwarf forest, and herb garden.

The Japanese garden features a dry cascade with ornamental grasses, evergreens, and rock forms.

The Mary Ann Sears Swetland rose garden is especially beautiful.  It features over 50 varieties of roses.

The gardens are open Tuesday through Saturday from 10-5, and Sunday from 12-5.

    1. In another decade. I'm sure there'll be some special events to commemorate this.

    1. There's something luring about a cave, isn't there?

  3. I'll put this on the list. Ray still needs to attend a Cleveland Indians baseball game. Sounds like we must visit this garden too

  4. It's a surprise to me that the oldest US public gardens are only from 1930. The gardens of Westminster Abbey have been continuously cultivated for over 900 years!
I love the idea of a dwarf forest.

  5. I had no idea the gardens in Cleveland were the oldest. I need to tell my best friend who lives in Cleveland that and suggest we go visit it next time. She's never mentioned it. Thanks for the post.

  6. Hi Sherry - I guess it's so old (as such - compared to ours ... not so!) - but because of its situation on the Great Lakes and presumably an early stopping off point down into mainland USA ... but interesting to know about - cheers Hilary
