But the well-known prison off the coast of San Francisco, California has some lovely gardens. The island of Alcatraz was a barren rock until the 1860s when the first residents planted gardens in pockets of imported soil. Sent to live on this gray island, army families took refuge in Victorian-style flower gardens around the prison.</p><p>Prisoners also gardened. Army prison crews, and later a few penitentiary inmates, created a manicured landscape that bloomed until the prison closed in 1963. The flowering terraces, rose beds, and lawns then grew wild for 40 years. </p><p>In 2003, the Garden Conservancy, the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, and the National Park Service began a joint effort to preserve and restore the historic gardens.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4DSt6PX2gIU_qUl8ulGHR025bWDFkLFk5-qnKIbV_fqzpIBtPsZ_cea4A05PXhd7Ho5Hv02RvV9FsCqqLsPgFUQ4eDKySA3hIG6sB6zSzVtQkMeyP902WmlVrpsHpXcFicHc8P7u1XyfeOC-5qoDupz0h4CF4_3REXyVjrJWABg7gEpWQZtZ7VG4BTyyq/s4032/Alcatraz.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4DSt6PX2gIU_qUl8ulGHR025bWDFkLFk5-qnKIbV_fqzpIBtPsZ_cea4A05PXhd7Ho5Hv02RvV9FsCqqLsPgFUQ4eDKySA3hIG6sB6zSzVtQkMeyP902WmlVrpsHpXcFicHc8P7u1XyfeOC-5qoDupz0h4CF4_3REXyVjrJWABg7gEpWQZtZ7VG4BTyyq/s320/Alcatraz.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br /><p>The only way to see Alcatraz up close and personal is to take a ferry over. The cost options for tours vary, but most are around $40. If you're in San Francisco, go online to reserve your place on the ferry. You can stay as long as you want once you're there. Ferries leave every hour. The last one departs from Alcatraz at 4:45. </p><p><br /></p>Sherry Ellishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07844837212122243321noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5226513677340811746.post-84784108064064840212024-01-04T12:14:00.000-08:002024-01-04T12:16:14.770-08:00Hearst Castle Gardens<p> </p><div class="post-body entry-content" id="post-body-7082246686058853411" itemprop="description articleBody" style="font-size: 13.2px; line-height: 1.4; position: relative; width: 520px;"><div class="separator" style="background-color: #333333; clear: both; color: #cccccc; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="background-color: #333333; clear: both; color: #cccccc; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="background-color: #333333; clear: both; color: #cccccc; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="background-color: #333333; clear: both; color: #cccccc; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px; text-align: center;"><br /></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0taTUJo531bzs5lXdGAETFSyVOzv3cWQ7uwXR0WxxRUSFQ3xICdiL-PrlS3hDp6fF_m_t5qE4_dgcR3ax_OrH4DGwq5qq3BrZBz1qimuTznfinzGDPxaJVSrAoafZB0YY4YTuLIxGXaDG/s1600/hearst+castle+garden.jpg" style="background-color: #333333; clear: right; color: #dd7700; float: right; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-decoration-line: none;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0taTUJo531bzs5lXdGAETFSyVOzv3cWQ7uwXR0WxxRUSFQ3xICdiL-PrlS3hDp6fF_m_t5qE4_dgcR3ax_OrH4DGwq5qq3BrZBz1qimuTznfinzGDPxaJVSrAoafZB0YY4YTuLIxGXaDG/s1600/hearst+castle+garden.jpg" style="background: rgb(17, 17, 17); border: 1px solid rgb(17, 17, 17); box-shadow: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.1) 1px 1px 5px; padding: 1px; position: relative;" /></a><br style="background-color: #333333; color: #cccccc; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px;" /><span face="Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif" style="background-color: #333333; color: #cccccc; font-size: 13.2px;">The Hearst Castle Gardens are located near San Simeon, California, along the Central Coast, off of Highway 1. They are part of the impressive estate of newspaper magnate, William Randolph Hearst. The castle and gardens were designed by Julia Morgan between 1919 and 1947. The castle showcases Mr. Hearst's vast collection of antiques. Getting up to the castle and gardens is an interesting ride. Visitors will take a bus that travels up a 1600-foot high hill, winding past grazing cattle and an occasional zebra. Yes, that's right. Mr. Hearst had a zoo up on his hill with a collection of exotic animals. The zebras escaped when the zoo was being dismantled. The herds of zebras are descended from the original zoo animals.</span><br style="background-color: #333333; color: #cccccc; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px;" /><br style="background-color: #333333; color: #cccccc; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px;" /><br style="background-color: #333333; color: #cccccc; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px;" /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhg9CFg0L5Nmj5s-bdeai1gv0A8MQeY5CmQLyxllgir9fJTA9Uu1kdyCCyuCFh1-ugqhGt_4o4ofx9iStnF4FvPjJ0GSJ3sKYhK1XoCV7ebaKtBSwxx8UWnqFhd-dq1Yea1ehRY7nopVKmr/s1600/hearst+neptune+fountain.jpg" style="background-color: #333333; clear: left; color: #dd7700; float: left; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-decoration-line: none;"></a><br style="background-color: #333333; color: #cccccc; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px;" /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhg9CFg0L5Nmj5s-bdeai1gv0A8MQeY5CmQLyxllgir9fJTA9Uu1kdyCCyuCFh1-ugqhGt_4o4ofx9iStnF4FvPjJ0GSJ3sKYhK1XoCV7ebaKtBSwxx8UWnqFhd-dq1Yea1ehRY7nopVKmr/s1600/hearst+neptune+fountain.jpg" style="background-color: #333333; clear: left; color: #dd7700; float: left; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-decoration-line: none;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhg9CFg0L5Nmj5s-bdeai1gv0A8MQeY5CmQLyxllgir9fJTA9Uu1kdyCCyuCFh1-ugqhGt_4o4ofx9iStnF4FvPjJ0GSJ3sKYhK1XoCV7ebaKtBSwxx8UWnqFhd-dq1Yea1ehRY7nopVKmr/s1600/hearst+neptune+fountain.jpg" style="background: rgb(17, 17, 17); border: 1px solid rgb(17, 17, 17); box-shadow: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.1) 1px 1px 5px; padding: 1px; position: relative;" /> <br /></a><span face="Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif" style="background-color: #333333; color: #cccccc; font-size: 13.2px;">Once at the castle, visitors will see luxurious gardens designed on a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The 45-acre lake is home to eight species of swans.<br /><br />The story surrounding the garden is rather interesting. It began in 1927 as a private fishing retreat for Hamilton Carr Bland, a local businessman. He had attempted to landscape his home with irises but failed miserably. Frustrated, he dug up all the iris bulbs and dumped them at the lake. The next spring, the irises came up and bloomed. They've been flourishing ever since. Mr. Bland deeded the gardens to the city in 1949.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKnk-7myiIyTXqh-q3wQVOe2kINXwC1TmqsG84vkEPNACStBDIfpeQdF8sJ04U-1NJ251lYeMhqiVL4J2AFXuJIt-L4qviWX3vromeH5_Ag1HrN9viz0CJ-ABuJqFWsaicODXtb41JxCL3/s1600/Swan+lake+iris+garden+swan.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="color: #dd7700; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-decoration-line: none;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKnk-7myiIyTXqh-q3wQVOe2kINXwC1TmqsG84vkEPNACStBDIfpeQdF8sJ04U-1NJ251lYeMhqiVL4J2AFXuJIt-L4qviWX3vromeH5_Ag1HrN9viz0CJ-ABuJqFWsaicODXtb41JxCL3/s1600/Swan+lake+iris+garden+swan.jpg" style="background: rgb(17, 17, 17); border: 1px solid rgb(17, 17, 17); box-shadow: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.1) 1px 1px 5px; padding: 1px; position: relative;" /></a></div><br />The gardens are open from 7:30 a.m. until dusk. It's not so much about the plants, as it is the artwork. The Charles W. Ireland Sculpture Garden, located in Birmingham, Alabama, is part of the Birmingham Museum of Art. It is a 30,000 square foot garden designed in 1993 by Elyn Zimmerman. It has three levels with changing exhibits: The Red Mountain Garden area which houses sculptures of Augusta Rodin and contemporary artists, a Lower Gallery which is for temporary exhibits, and the Upper Plaza which is for monumental sculptures. Two very nice features are the waterwall, entitled, Lithos II by Elyn Zimmerman, and the colorful Blue Pools Courtyard by Valerie Jaudon.<br /><br />The gardens are a nice place to go for a leisurely stroll, or to park yourself on a bench and admire the artwork.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7z6Kj8rlizXsKqMfsjV1-XCTOoIcn6aBwYw7cOW1jav0697EK7n7cghr2sphSbuRXvGTgH4QYFhpS6wHWeVgPwreNej7nO87A9rpHFSHCDt9ax9uRdV5ThH5LwmIp0MayT2P2nrSKEMwW/s1600/charles+ireland+sculpture.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="color: #dd7700; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-decoration-line: none;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7z6Kj8rlizXsKqMfsjV1-XCTOoIcn6aBwYw7cOW1jav0697EK7n7cghr2sphSbuRXvGTgH4QYFhpS6wHWeVgPwreNej7nO87A9rpHFSHCDt9ax9uRdV5ThH5LwmIp0MayT2P2nrSKEMwW/s1600/charles+ireland+sculpture.jpg" style="background: rgb(17, 17, 17); border: 1px solid rgb(17, 17, 17); box-shadow: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.1) 1px 1px 5px; padding: 1px; position: relative;" /></a></div><br />The gardens are open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Sundays from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM. It's a simple way to add to your plant collection or share it with others. Golden Pothos is one of the easiest to do this with. </p><p><br /></p><p>Step 1: Make the cut. I like to trim a piece with a few leaves on it just below the bump where the leaf attaches to the stem.</p><p>Step 2: Place in water. Put the cut end in a clear glass of warm water. Make sure there's enough space for the roots to grow and expand. </p><p>Step 3: Let it sit for 2-4 weeks near a window and watch as roots sprout. The picture above are plants that are 4 weeks old. You can see the roots sprouting. They're ready to be planted in soil. (The parent plant is right next to them.)</p><p>Step 4: Plant in soil. Choose a pot with good drainage. Gather the roots in a clump (root ball), and plant about two inches below the soil's surface. Keep the soil moist for at least a week as the baby plants get used to the new environment. </p><p>Then place them around your house or give them as gifts to others.</p><p> </p>Sherry Ellishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07844837212122243321noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5226513677340811746.post-14022137114996969152022-09-08T09:18:00.004-07:002022-09-08T09:18:35.486-07:00Nemours Mansion and Gardens<p> </p><h3 class="post-title entry-title" itemprop="name" style="background-color: #333333; color: #cccccc; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 22px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0.75em 0px 0px; position: relative;"><br /></h3><div class="post-header" style="background-color: #333333; color: #cccccc; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 10.8px; line-height: 1.6; margin: 0px 0px 1.5em;"><div class="post-header-line-1"></div></div><div class="post-body entry-content" id="post-body-934600751796806901" itemprop="description articleBody" style="background-color: #333333; color: #cccccc; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px; line-height: 1.4; position: relative; width: 520px;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkp8p8e6sX5ft75Agm2VZ39-F44nu_6ZyW-sjSE-UF5Rvv1bnQOvZfosB9nHu9D5C9364WVQc2wmJ-Nks9e2KsNcfxUV6Mr-sYl7ruE0TpGSH_ZbijMTRZv6zoNA4Ne-L3QCOro2pmtZE6/s1600/nemours+mansion+and+gardens.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="color: #dd7700; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-decoration-line: none;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkp8p8e6sX5ft75Agm2VZ39-F44nu_6ZyW-sjSE-UF5Rvv1bnQOvZfosB9nHu9D5C9364WVQc2wmJ-Nks9e2KsNcfxUV6Mr-sYl7ruE0TpGSH_ZbijMTRZv6zoNA4Ne-L3QCOro2pmtZE6/s1600/nemours+mansion+and+gardens.jpg" style="background: rgb(17, 17, 17); border: 1px solid rgb(17, 17, 17); box-shadow: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.1) 1px 1px 5px; padding: 1px; position: relative;" /></a></div><br />Nemours Mansion and Gardens, located in Wilmington, Delaware, is a 300 acre estate with French formal gardens.
